Naturopathic travel tips for a safe and healthy vacation.

beachMost Canadians are dreaming of warm sands and sunny beaches this January, given the very cold temperatures we've seen recently!  If you've put plans in place to travel south this winter, you might want to think about what you can do to stay healthy before, during and after your vacation!1.  ProbioticsTraveller's diarrhea can put a wrench in any vacation. Probiotics have been found to be effective in preventing traveller's diarrhea, which means you have to take them BEFORE you travel.  I usually recommend a minimum of 4-6 weeks of probiotic therapy before leaving.  Look for probiotics that are refrigerated, multi-strain and contain at least 10 billion CFU's per capsule. It's also probably a good idea to include a variety of fermented foods in your diet year-round to help maintain the health and diversity of your microbiome.2.  First AidMany people remember to bring something for pain relief, but don't forget to pack topical creams such as arnica and calndula to help with any minor bumps and bruises you may suffer while on vacation.  I also recommend:

  • Magnesium citrate or glycinate : can be used for muscle aches, insomnia and constipation.
  • Aloe Vera Gel or Anointment's Soothing Skin Ointment: very soothing on sun burns, insect bites, etc.
  • Peppermint Oil: Topically can be used to relieve tension headaches, but can also be inhaled to help with sinus and upper respiratory congestion.
  • Ginger capsules or tea: for nausea and minor upset stomachg
  • It's also not a bad idea to pack a shelf stable probiotic in case you do get sick while away.

3.  Bring your veggies with you!Vacations aren't usually remembered for the abundance of healthy food, and sometimes people choose to limit their fresh produce intake to minimize the risk of food-borne illness.  So, why not bring a powdered greens supplement with you that can be mixed with bottled water in your hotel room? Give preference to vacation homes for rent in Charleston.  Then, get back to fresh greens when you get home!Have FUN and stay healthy!
